Nigerian afropop star Mr Eazi releases a captivating short film to accompany his single ‘The Don’, selected from his ‘Something Else’ EP.

Produced by Killertunes and E Kelly, the afrobeats release fuses the airy instrumentals and a percolating rhythm characteristic of the genre, with the more intense narrative of the film’s storyline. For the visual, Mr Eazi plays ‘The Don’, a crime boss who we watch as he is busted out of police custody by his loyal associates, and successfully returns to power. Shot in around Ghana in various locations including Aburi, Cape Coast, Dodowa and Elmina, the film is beautifully made, providing a surprisingly delicate depiction of The Don’s rich world in which he is master.

Mr Eazi peppers the film with narration, offering insight into the mindset of his character. Towards the end he explains, “There are a couple of things that are really important to a Don, and that is family, respect, trust and loyalty. In fact, loyalty is everything. Sometimes, I would even say loyalty over competence. On the way to becoming this person that you’ve always wanted to be, you face everything, you see the love, you see the joy, you see the happiness, you see the sadness you see the failure, you see the hate and you feel the betrayal. But everything just brings you to this point. The point where you are right now.”

The Don is somewhat of an alter-ego for Mr Eazi, who is undoubtedly committed to being a Don in music and business, becoming a huge success in whatever he turns his gaze to next.

Following the release of his ‘Something Else’ EP, Mr Eazi explained how important The Don mindset was to his work, “I spent the entire year working on building emPawa Africa and morphing into ‘Don Eazi’. I almost had no time to record. This project was inspired by Kel P and Killertunes, who kept coming to meet me in Accra until I finally recorded ‘The Don’. That opened the door for me getting back in the studio.”
