DISCOVER Picks [Playlist] 2020 Vol.4 | Berna, Lylo Gold, Jelani Blackman & more!

DSTNGR PICKS SPOTIFY BANNER_2.001

Another month down, another playlist for your wondering ears! We have a habit of kicking things off pretty calm, cool and collected before turning up the heat however, for our DISCOVER Picks Vol.4 we switch it up and bring the fire from the moment you hit that play button.

Talking of ‘Bring The Fire’ this month’s playlist opens with ‘Piss Poor’ by North London based rapper Coops, taken from his recently released album ‘Crimes Against Creation.’ A dark and twisted hip hop offering, storytelling the reality and necessity of narcotics and street life. Slipping into the 2016 classic performance from Leicester born artist Kamakaze, officially releasing ‘Justice,’ a heartfelt account of societal issues from youth incarceration to systematic racism. All proceeds from the release will be donated to Black Lives Matter. Berna’s new ‘Lightwork Freestyle’ is so infectious, we literally couldn’t decide between Part 1 + 2 so we flung them both in the mix. Infusing much loved drill beats with cheeky yet intricate lyricism, making Berna a strong contender to becoming one of our favs from the drill scene.

The vibe changes up slightly, as we move into some alternative hip hop with ‘Lost My Mind’ by Dave B featuring Jay Prince then into some African sounds from the likes of Kida Kudz and Dani Draco. From here the mellowness begins to set in with Radiant Child’s second release of 2020 ‘Mariposa,’ an uplifting jazzy number to soothe our worries away. Sinead Harnett makes a return to our playlist, this time with assistance from sister duo VanJess and magical musician Masego for ‘Stickin’, a soulful electronic offering for those shimmering summer nights. London based R&B singer Lylo Gold surprises us with a refix version of her April release ‘Foreplay’ by Baker Aaron. The original was already a vibe but this future beats version adds that much welcomed sugar on top.

The remainder of the playlist continues blissfully with an array of soulful wonders. Jelani Blackman’s ‘Tricky’ delivers truthful commentary around complex situations, his recognisable rap vocal glides across the heavily bass led track with the addition of sultry female backing vocals. ‘97 gold infiniti’ by Texas singer Emeryld has to be one of the favourites for Vol. 4, her raspy vocal brings around a peacefulness, laced across a soundscape of stunning orchestral sounds. Dutch Sudanese artist Gaidaa delivers her new single ‘Stranger’, a soothing jazz influenced R&B offering featuring Saba and Jarreau Vandal. The playlist then closes out with Ryan Trey’s ‘Rollin’, delivering pure sexiness in the form of trap-soul loveliness.

Enjoy!
