Building from a bassy slow burner into a hypnotic beat-laden banger, rap and R&B artist 070 Shake’s new track ‘Cocoon’ will catch you off guard in the best possible way. Beginning with a staccato, attention-grabbing bass-line, the energy hooks us instantly before Shake’s stirring sing-speak drags us in even further as she riffs parallel to the bass. Moving into the bridge, her rapping becomes more melodic, her verses shifting into an incantation as she muses, “I guess they shoulda known, known, known, known, known / Flowers gonna bloom, bloom, bloom, bloom, bloom”. Drama strikes when the beat drops, and Shake has us all losing it to her hooky, tantalising chorus. The crafty, shifting energy of this one is hard to beat, and proving herself to be as idiosyncratic as she is versatile, Shake demonstrates once again with ‘Cocoon’ that she’s an absolute pro at the top of her game.
