FKJ - Different Masks For Different Days [Video]

‘V I N C E N T’ artwork

A luscious offering from his second album ‘V I N C E N T’, which features a host of some of the coolest artists including Santana, Little Dragon, ((( O ))) and Toro Y Moi, ‘Different Masks For Different Days’ is a beautiful example of producer and multi-instrumentalist FKJ’s (which is an abbreviation of French Kiwi Juice) rare talent for crafting evocative, delicate soundscapes and making complex, genre-blending compositions feel effortless and intuitive.

FKJ explains more on the meaning behind the pensive, sax-led single and its meditative Greg Barnes directed music-video:

“The inspiration for this title came from the feeling of being a social chameleon. From time to time I would catch myself altering my being depending on who I was with. A weird feeling which made me write down this sentence ‘Different Masks For Different Days’.

The day I made this instrumental I felt this was the one. The one that would appropriate this title. There is something melancholic and dark about hiding behind a mask and not fully showing yourself. Visuals of a big city by night, the place and time where most socialisation takes place, would cross my mind. With a main character that would be the chameleon. Jumping from a group of people to another.

When I was done with my album I sent it to Greg Barnes at Black Dog Films who I wished to work with so that we could choose a song to work on. I didn’t tell him about any initial ideas so that he would be free flowing. He chose to write on ‘Different Masks For Different Days’. The planets totally aligned because the concept he came up with was so similar to a cherry on the cake : the chameleon would imitate through dance.

When we started working on the casting, Mes Lesne and I crossed paths through a common friend in Paris. I was mesmerised by his dancing, as was Greg. We didn’t look any further, he was the one for this role.”
