Singer-songwriter and producer Nina Cobham has shared a video for new track ‘Too Much’, to celebrate the release of her debut EP. Though born in Leeds, Nina grew up moving between Spain and England and uses her bilingual approach in her songwriting, often fleeting in an out of Spanish with ease. This element, alongside her angelic vocals and anecdotal lyricism, gives her sound an authentic finish.

The EP, titled ‘what colour does this feel like?’, was written as a form of escapism during lockdown and stems from her ability to associate colours with music. Though statedly not synaesthesia, it’s clear the tracks come from a mind that has a special affinity for playing with sound dynamics and how they connect. The EP is carried by a light airy production that embraces bassy synths that give the songs depth and maturity. On ‘por razones sentimentales’ – English translation ‘for sentimental reasons’, Nina can be heard singing, “I see things like movie scenes in my mind // sequences and sounds tracks intertwined // for sentimental reasons // I romanticise everything // you say it’s distracting.”

Each of the four tracks reflect a different season and different time of the day, blending seamlessly into a well-rounded debut body of work. The video for ‘Too Much’, a melting R&B track written alongside Oscar Scheller, is set at a house party and sees Nina drifting around in a daze while lighting and camera work is used to mirror the sound design of the track.

There are sound design elements in the track specifically engineered to sound like specific aspects of a party,” explains Nina. “So when it came to creating the video, the vision I had for it was really just visually representing the journey the song takes you on. The song makes more sense together with the video - kind of like a movie scene soundtrack, because it was literally written with this specific party scene in mind. Working with a director that could really catch this vision and enhance it, rather than try to change it was really important, and I think Phoebe was the perfect person for that!"
