To say the least, Friday was a magical experience! With Covid-19 restrictions in place across the world for the most part of 2021, Ghana was no exception with live music events being dropped off the calendar. As the city slowly swings back into normality, we took the opportunity to deliver something truly special for the creatives of Accra. Birthing our DISCOVER LIVE series was always the plan however, it was never intended to launch in Accra… We’re super happy it did!

We brought six incredible artists to the stage of One Corner Garden, a cultural hub in Kokomlemle, Accra which many in the city had never been to before. An intimate garden setting with african crafts and sculptured wooden furniture was the perfect backdrop for our intimate affair and both our guests and performers were highly impressed by the overall experience. A dope location with good food and drinks, immersed with great people and music from an array of eclectic talents… is this not the dream we’ve been waiting for?

DJ & MC Handsome Fellah

DJ & MC Handsome Fellah

Kicking off the evening was our resident DJ Handsome Fellah, effortlessly setting the mood with Afro-infused sounds to bring the garden to life. As guests started to arrive, he kept the tunes flowing in force whilst we awaited our first act.

DISCOVER LIVE host Mawcom X

DISCOVER LIVE host Mawcom X

Our host Mawcom X did an absolute stellar job keeping the crowd both informed and entertained, as he kicked off the show with an introduction to the Made Music Africa Band and a quick cheeky freestyle. Throughout he gave the crowd short stories of how he got to know each artist taking to the stage and why they are such great talents.

Nigerian Afro-Indie, Folk artist Tommy WÁ

Afro-Indie, Folk artist Tommy WÁ opened the show with an outstanding performance. Purely electric, as he wooed the crowd with his raspy, county like vocals, strumming his guitar with pure confidence and the stage presence of a fully fledged performer. Although very much an emerging act, he’s been performing for a while and it shows.

Ghanaian artist Marince Omario

Marince Omario took to the stage next, bringing to life his creatively invented genre ‘fu’. His Asquad was live and direct in the crowd as they sang along to his songs of alt-African Hip Hop, spiced up with the musical layers of the Made Music Africa Band.

Ghanaian Singer-Songwriter Ria Boss

Topping off the first half of DISCOVER LIVE was our soulful Cat Mama, Ria Boss. Yet another streamlined performer naturally commanding the audience’s attention with such authority, flair and spiritual essence. The intimacy was felt as she floated onto the stage, bare foot and in a colourful 2-piece oversized ensemble. To be honest, I actually need that outfit, she rocked it flawlessly!

Handsome Fellah, took to the decks once again this time throwing in a splash of much wanted Amapiano - the sound of African dance music at this present moment in time. It’s taken a while for South African House to penetrate the musical interests of West Africa but in 2021, we are here!

Nigerian Afrobeats artist WES7AR 22

Opening the second half of the showcase was WES7AR 22 and my oh my, was his performance one to remember. The Nigerian afrobeats artist, really brought the fire to the stage from pristine vocals to his immense performance energy. His alignment with the band was epic, which if you caught the IG live stream of his rehearsal earlier in the day, you would have seen him perfecting the impactful musical moments for his set.

Ghanaian singer Efya and Nigerian artist Ogranya

Fellow Nigerian artist Ogranya, brought calm back to the venue with a delicate but intimate and heartfelt performance, bringing tones of R&B and emotion to the stage. He also treated the audience to a surprise appearance from Ghanaian singer-songwriter Efya, as the pair performed their 2020 duet single ‘Wicked Somebody’.

Headline act MOLIY

Headline act MOLIY

Ending the night looking pretty in pink, with a splash of cool sporting a pair of black & red Nike Shox was our headline act MOLIY. It was her first ever headline show but she took to the stage with such confidence and pride. Her charismatic and playful personality shone through delightfully as she spoke about the songs she performed from her debut EP ‘Wondergirl.’ With the crowd singing along to every word, MOLIY gave the crowd exactly what they wanted, as she danced around the stage with an element of coyness. Her Afro-fusion tracks sounding incredible with the Made Africa Music Band, especially Ghana Bop which was plain and simply a whole damn vibe.

Rightly so, MOLIY made a point to note that herself and the artists on the line up where performing for the love to deliver the DISCOVER LIVE showcase, which was completely free for all to attend. In doing so, we’ve created six limited edition t-shirts via Everpress to help support the artists. Each artist will receive 50% of the creator profits made from each t-shirt. Lastly, the t-shirts are available to buy online until 13 July 2021.
