Michl - Holidays [Video]

After 4 years away from the game, LA’s Michl makes a dramatic return with a fresh serotonin boosting single ‘Holidays’.

The artist’s winning brand of distorted electro-pop has been sorely missed during this significant stretch of time spent away. The producer, singer and songwriter, who has previously worked with wildly successful alt-pop artists Mura Masa and Billie Eilish, combines effervescent electronic soundscapes with ear-worm melodies and emphatic vocals to create seriously exciting EDM-influenced warped pop music. At first, ‘Holidays’ seems like a buoyant tribute to summer days spent frivolously, opening with the lyrics, “sipping champagne on a wednesday / Turning work weeks into holidays,” but turns out to be a challenge, with verses like, “Floating on a pedestal / River running red / Well I can feel the residue / Falling on my head.” Michl’s timely reflections are ripe for a time where privileged influencers and celebs alike have been criticised for flocking to far flung vacation spots in the midst of a pandemic, ignorant of the devastation that surrounds them. In the song’s incredible, glitchy visual, rather idyllic scenes of Los Angeles in summer are interspersed with darker images of destruction, highlighting the bad behaviour that ‘Holidays’ cheekily skewers.
