An emergence of underground music has been spilling out of Africa for a while now, with boundaries being pushed beyond what’s commonly known or accepted as the sound of West Africa. From High Life to Afrobeats, Afrobeats to Alté and now, the underground rap scene of Accra is well on it’s way to international recognition.

Accra born music artist $pacely, is one of Ghana’s musical gems. Having grown up in Geneva, Switzerland his exposure to an array of culture is apparent within his sound and musical delivery. Fluent in English, French and Ghanaian dialects Twi and Ga, $pacely’s international palette provides him with such a compelling tone. His voice alone, can make any track an instant banger!

As a member of Ghana’s popular music collective La Même Gang, $pacely is very much at the forefront of Ghana’s musical trajectory and transition from Afrobeats, to alternative african sounds such as trap music and new age hip hop. October 2019 saw the release of ‘Fine$$e Or Be Fine$$ed,’ a project released by $pacely, displaying a concoction of musical flavours from traditional Afrobeats to heavy 808 driven trap bangers.

‘Yawa’ featuring Kofi Mole (who is another absolutely incredible Ghanaian talent), is most definitely the highlight track from the ‘Fine$$e Or Be Fine$$ed,’ project. A perfect club banger, laced with $pacely’s infectious bass tone, complemented with a skippy verse from Mole and marinated into the Kuvie produced trap influenced track. The official video premiered just last week by Trace Jama, shines light on the creative potential Ghana has to offer. Directed by TwoSteps, the lo-fi style video is simple yet effective, pooling an all male entourage dressed in black, with impressive black and white portrait style shots by photographer Elikem, flashing in and out of the scenes.
